Privacy policy
Last updated September 28, 2026. This covers tipsyrounds.com, the phone and host screens, and the TipsyRounds TV apps for Fire TV and Google TV. Questions? Contact us.
The short version
- You can play without an account. We keep what a game needs: the name you type, your answers and your score.
- We don't sell your data, and we don't use outside ad networks or tracking scripts. Ads on the site are our own sponsor spots.
- Payments go through Stripe. Your card number never reaches our servers.
- We keep IP addresses for a short time (30 days by default) to fight abuse and show rough location stats, then drop them.
What we collect
When you play
- Your player name, emoji and colour, and the team you join, for that night.
- Your answers and scores, including anything you type into a game (like a lie in Fib Finder or an answer in Who Said That?). The host and the room see these as part of the game.
- A player profile, made automatically so your stats and badges carry over between nights. It's tied to a cookie on your phone. If you choose to, you can add an email address and password to save it. You can also choose to show it on public leaderboards.
- Your location, only if the host turns on "players must be nearby". Your phone shares its position once to check you're at the venue. We compare it with the host's position and don't keep yours. The host's position is erased when the night ends.
- An area you pick for "near me" leaderboards (like "Austin, TX"), if you set one.
When you host
- Your account: email address, display name, password (stored scrambled, never in plain text), time zone and plan. Guest hosts have no email; their temporary accounts are deleted after about 12 hours.
- Your nights: the games, settings, questions and results. If you add a venue, its name, address, logo and schedule are shown on its public venue page.
When you pay, tip or advertise
- Payments: we keep your name, email, the amount, an optional note and Stripe's reference numbers. Stripe handles the card itself (see Stripe's privacy policy). If you opt in to the thank-you wall, we show your first name and last initial.
- Contact and advertising forms: whatever you send us (name, email, company, phone, message).
Automatically, when you visit
- Visit statistics: pages viewed, the site you came from, and the kind of device and browser (we don't store your full browser string). Visitors are counted with an anonymous code that changes every day.
- IP address: kept with a daily visit record and on player, host and TV-screen records. We use it to stop abuse, keep games fair and show rough location (city, region and country). The IP itself is erased after 30 days by default; the rough location stays with the statistics.
- TV screens: a TV that shows TipsyRounds (in a browser or our TV app) gets a random link code, plus its IP address and device type, so a host can connect it to their night or venue.
Cookies and storage on your device
We only use cookies we need to run the site. No advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. They:
- keep you signed in and protect forms (
tr_sess); - remember your player profile (
tr_pid, about a year) and your seat in tonight's game; - remember which night or venue a TV is linked to (
tr_tv); - remember choices like your "near me" area, sound and accessibility settings.
Your browser's local storage holds similar small settings, such as sound on or off, or a dismissed tip.
How we use it
- To run games: scoring, leaderboards, rewards, reconnecting you if your phone drops.
- To keep things fair and safe: join PINs, nearby checks, blocking abuse and spam, and filtering offensive typed answers on family nights.
- To email you, only if you asked. That covers account emails, receipts, a weekly results email and reminders for venues you follow. The weekly email contains a small image that tells us if it was opened. Every email has an unsubscribe link.
- To show sponsor spots. These are our own ads, sometimes chosen by rough location. We count views and clicks with anonymous codes.
- To understand which pages and games people use, so we can improve them.
Who else gets data
We don't sell or rent personal data. We share only what these services need to do their job:
- Stripe: payments.
- An IP-location service (GeoJS by default): turns an IP address into a rough city and region.
- Our email provider: delivers the emails you asked for.
- Google Cast: only when a host casts the game to a TV from their phone. Google's Cast software loads on that page.
- Our hosting provider: stores the site's database and backups.
We may also share data if the law requires it, or to protect players, hosts or the service from harm.
How long we keep it
- Visit statistics and ad counts: about 13 months.
- IP addresses: 30 days by default.
- Game results and player profiles: kept so stats and leaderboards work, until you ask us to delete them.
- Host accounts: until you ask us to delete them. Guest host accounts are deleted after about 12 hours.
- Payment records: as long as tax and accounting rules require.
- Backups: nightly backups roll off after 14 days, and weekly ones after 8 weeks.
Your choices and rights
- Delete your data: contact us and we'll delete your host account or player profile and the personal data tied to it.
- See or correct your data: most of it is on your player profile or host account page. For a copy of everything, contact us.
- Emails: unsubscribe from any email with one click, or change it on your profile or account page.
- Leaderboards: keep your player profile private and it won't appear on public leaderboards.
- Location: you can always say no to sharing your location. The host can let you in another way, such as a PIN.
Depending on where you live (for example California or the EU), you may have more rights, such as a copy of your data or objecting to how it's used. Contact us and we'll help.
Age
TipsyRounds is made for adults at bars and parties. Some question packs (R, NR, XXX) are for ages 18 and up; players confirm their age before joining those nights. We don't knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you think a child has given us personal data, contact us and we'll delete it.
Security
We use HTTPS everywhere and scramble passwords and sign-in tokens. Backups are stored where only we can read them. No system is perfect, but we work to keep your data safe and will tell you if something goes wrong that affects you.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. For big changes, we'll add a notice on the site.
